Christian Schneider's basket in the final seconds on Saturday lifted Papillion-LaVista South to a 41-40 win over North Platte.Schneider drove to the basket and he laid it up past North Platte's 6-foot-7 center Drew Callaghan and after it fell in after bouncing around the rim a couple of times.
There was still three seconds left but the Bulldogs (6-5) couldn't even get the ball inbounded, let alone down the court and the Titans (4-6) came away with the victory.
Schneider's shot followed a three-point play that Callaghan completed with a made free throw with 12 seconds left.
The game was a back and fourth battle. NPHS scored the first six points of the game and they led 18-8 nearly halfway through the second quarter.
But South went on an 11-0 run and the Titans took the lead with just over two minutes left in the half on a three-pointer by Aaron Rothermund.
After being tied at 21 at halftime, Papillion-LaVista South opened the second half with a pair of three-point plays by Rothermund and Aaron Pena to take a six-point lead.
The Titans were in control in the third quarter and they led 31-25 going into the fourth.
After South scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to eight, the Dawgs went on a 12-0 run to go up 37-33 after a pair of free throws by Shane Mauch.
But Rothermund came back with consecutive buckets to tie the game and to set the stage for its thrilling finish.
It was the second straight year that Papillion-LaVista South has come out on top over North Platte in a tight game. In the first round of districts, the Titans upset the Bulldogs. Both teams still qualified for state with South winning the district title over Omaha Bryan two days later and NPHS getting the wild card.
