Two mountain lions were harvested Thursday during Nebraska’s first mountain lion hunting season. Both mountain lions were males, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said.
A male lion weighing 103 pounds was killed in Sioux County and another lion weighing 138 pounds was shot in Dawes County.
Only two lions can be harvested each hunting season, so the season closed when the second one was shot, just a day after the season opened Jan. 1.
A second season in the Pine Ridge will open on Feb. 15.
Officials estimated a year ago that there are 20 or more mountain lions who have taken up residency and are procreating in Nebraska, a Game and Parks spokesman told the Bulletin.
