The novel Quentin McFury begins right here in North Platte and heads on out – first, down the road to Denver, and then to the distant reaches of the universe.

The hero, McFury, is a troubled 15-year-old freshman in high school.

He falls asleep in his English class and when he wakes up, everyone is gone.

The rapidly changing North Platte environment comes to life in chapter 2. Before that in chapter 1, the reader is right in the midst a hairy aircraft battle. McFury is the pilot of one ship. He is an outgunned but determined and clever in the face of disaster.

The chapters alternate from space to planet Earth.

At first, McFury is sorta happy to be alone on Earth. He wasn’t especially popular anyway. With everyone gone, he searches the rooms of his classmates to find out more about them, and looks at their computers too. He takes cars whenever he needs them and he plays with all the grownup toys he can find.

Gradually, McFury comes to understand his predicament, and the world’s. As the story develops, he steals the spaceship, falls for a purple girl and makes friends with a robot. Together, they fight to rescue earthlings.

Patrick Gorman of North Platte wrote Quentin McFury.

Gorman, a 1991 graduate of North Platte High, is an experienced writer. He wrote, directed and starred in a play known in the U.S. and Europe as The Star Wars Saga in Sixty Minutes.

That play has entertained Star Wars fans at conventions and celebrations for more than 15 years. In January, it earned him an interview of the nationally televised ABC program, Nightline.

Gorman also has written a stage adaptation of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, and Four Guys Eating Out, as well as screenplays for Universal Studios and Twentieth Century Fox.

He created his famous Star Wars play in college, comically condensing the saga for his master’s thesis project.

Patrick’s love of Star Wars began when he watched the movie at age five, said his father Tom Gorman, who retired in 2012 after a distinguished career at Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte.

Patrick went to Los Angeles by himself after high school, setting out alone to get involved in the movie business.

He will return to North Platte Saturday, Dec. 28 at A to Z Books in North Platte, where he will sign books and discuss his work from 1-3 p.m.

He is happy to be back in his hometown, and his hometown bookstore.

“It’s been a long trip writing all these years,” he said. “and to come back to my hometown to sign copies of my own book at the same place that I bought comic books as a 12-year-old is a real honor. Back when I was growing up here, the story of Quentin McFury is the kind of adventure I wish had happened to me.”

“Having the opportunity to sign my book — which in some ways is a sci-fi love letter to North Platte — in my hometown is the coolest Christmas present,” he said.

Gorman will also attend Open Mic Nite on Saturday evening at the bookstore. He will read from his work and answer questions for about 30 minutes, starting around 8 p.m.
