I recently came across your wonderful article about Bill Riley (published Feb. 20, 2013 during Black History Month) while doing genealogy research on families who knew and interacted with my family in the late 1800s-early 1900s.

Bill Riley's grandfather, Albert Riley, was a contemporary of my father and his siblings.

Charles Meehan, who you mention in your article, was my grandfather.

(The Rileys and Meehans came from Canada after the Civil War and settled in Overton, Nebraska. In 1910 they moved to DeWitty /Brownlee. - Editor)

Attached is a picture of my grandparents, Charles and Hester Freeman Meehan, taken in 1898, as well as a picture of Albert Riley, Sr. probably taken in Cherry County - it's from my dad's collection of pictures and may have been taken by my dad, Bill Meehan – the youngest of the Meehan children.

I am also sending a page from my grandfather’s Land Entry file in 1913. This one document contains the names of five of the black Canadian homesteaders who ventured to Nebraska -- William Crawford, George Brown, Joshua Emanuel and Albert F. Riley are all listed with Charles Meehan.

Thank you again for the lovely article - it has been quite helpful.
