The council unanimously approved bids for new equipment for the electric and sanitation departments.

A bid of $717,116 was approved for four new Freightliner diesel truck chassis with GS Products side loading refuse compaction units from Nebraska Truck Center. The trucks are one-man units to replace older two-man rear dump refuse trucks.

A Janssen Auto Group bid of $48,342 for two 2014 half-ton 4x4 crew cab pickups was also accepted. The trucks are for the electric department.

The major item was a bid from Western Engineering Company for $1.5 million for street re-surfacing. It is a Nebraska Department of Roads re-surfacing project of U.S. Highway 30 (Rodeo Road) starting at Sycamore St. and stretching more than 20 blocks past Mills Ave.

This will not result in any assessments to adjacent property owners.

The council accepted that bid and authorized the mayor to sign the contract.

The council previously approved the Rodeo Road project at a July 16 meeting.

City Administrator Jim Hawks urged the council to act promptly on the bid to take advantage of some state roads money that is available.

The project is expected to be completed in the summer.

Hawks said that the state of Nebraska will pay about 80% of the total cost of the project with the city paying the remainder and being responsible for non-maintenance items.

Also, the council authorized the mayor to sign all necessary documents for submission of the 2012-13 road-street highway budget and expenditure report, a routine procedure.

In other action, the council:

Approved an application from Coors Distributing of North Platte, Inc. for a change of location of their liquor license from 642 N. Willow to their new office next door at 640 N. Willow. The office adjoins the warehouse, and the application has to hang in the office.

Authorized the mayor to execute the annual lottery operator agreement with Cody Keno, Inc. for the city.

This report was published first in the Dec. 18 print edition of the North Platte Bulletin.
