Lincoln County sheriff's deputies were called at 4:15 p.m. to Bell Prairie Road and U.S. Highway 83, about five miles north of Wellfleet, the Lincoln County sheriff reported.

A westbound Honda driven by 70-year-old Clarence “Butch” Way, Sr. of Wauneta pulled off the county road onto the highway in front of a northbound Ford pickup driven by McCook resident Bryce Buhr, 22, the sheriff's report said.

Buhr's pickup rammed into the driver’s door of Way's car at highway speed.

Way sustained serious injuries and had to be cut out of the vehicle. A rescue chopper was called and carried him to Great Plains Regional Medical Center. Later, he was flown to a Denver hospital for further treatment, however, he was reportedly in stable condition, the sheriff's office said.

A passenger in Way’s vehicle was not as seriously injured but was also taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

Buhr did not sustain any injuries and the passenger in his vehicle only had bumps and bruises, the sheriff said.

At this point alcohol does not appear to be a factor. An accident reconstructionist from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office helped in the investigation, which is continuing, the sheriff said.
