Nearly 640 people were served Friday at the 13th annual free Donna’s Dinner at the Harvest Christian Fellowship northwest campus, continuing a long-standing tradition even though Donna now lives in Texas.

In 2000, Donna Girty-Cross served her first free dinner at the North Platte Livestock Market café to about 50 people.

She grew up in a low-income home in North Platte during the 1940s and early ’50s, dreaming of someday having a big meal for others.

Each year, the diners receive a meal of turkey, ham, dressing, potatoes and plenty of side dishes, with live entertainment and a visit from Santa. Most items are donated through the generosity of dozens of people and businesses.

Donna owned and operated Donna’s Kitchen (now Lincoln Highway Diner) at Rodeo Road and Willow until 2010, when she married Frank Cross and moved to Wyoming. The couple stays in Texas during the winters.

She said she was humbled and happy that the annual meal is still served. (see Donna’s letter on the opinion page.)
