Police stop red-handed, rowdy burglar Tell North Platte what you think

The North Platte Police responded quickly early Wednesday morning and caught a man who they saw trying to break into a home.

At around 4:50 a.m. Wednesday morning, police responded to the 200 block of East 10th on the report of an attempted break in.

An officer saw the man, Lukas Camacho, 19, trying to break through a sliding glass door at the back of the home.

Police spokesman Rodney Brown said Camacho tried to get away by ramming his body through the privacy fence, but the officer managed to capture Camacho. But, as police escorted Camacho from the back yard, he kicked the back gate open and broke the latch.

The homeowner said Camacho first tried to break in through the front door, and was "very shaken by the incident," police spokesman Rodney Brown said.

Camacho struggled with the police when they tried to secure him in the patrol car, but he was transported to the Lincoln County Jail, charged with a series of crimes -- attempted burglary, a felony, as well as criminal mischief, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace and minor in possession of alcohol.

The damage to the back door, latch and fence was estimated at around $150.

Brown did not say if Comacho is connected to the rash of petty thefts in late November through North Platte.

Camacho was arrested Nov. 18 for failure to appear as a fugitive from Box Butte County. He served a day in the Lincoln County Jail, according to sheriff's records.
