The latest cluster of thefts near East 12th.

Ten thefts and two burglaries were reported over the weekend to the North Platte police, mostly from vehicles.

The large number of thefts and break-ins reported Friday-Sunday continues a 10-day rash of incidents. Nearly 70 thefts and burglaries have been reported since Nov. 15, according to police logs.

Most stolen items are cash, MP3 players, wallets and so forth from unlocked cars, even cars parked in garages, police spokesman Rodney Brown has said.

Brown said Monday that there are no suspects yet. He encourages people to be vigilant.

“We have not seen an increase of suspicious activity complaints,” he said. “(And) the information gathered so far as not been helpful to date.”

“We encourage the public to be sensitive to suspicious noises -- to people out walking or standing during the early morning hours,” Brown said. “The suspects work in teams of at least two people. One always serves as a lookout while the other attempts the crime.”

The suspects appear to be focusing on quick and easy targets that are unsecured. They hit one, then move on to the next one, Brown said last week.

If you see any suspicious persons or activity, call the police non-emergency line 308-535-6789. It is staffed 24 hours a day.

Also, be sure to remove all valuables from your vehicle and lock it when it's not in use.

"This is a practice that should be followed not only at a time as now, but all the time," Brown said.
