North Platte attorney Bob Lindemeier has been honored with the Don Fiedler Excellence in Criminal Defense Award from the Nebraska Criminal Defense Attorney's Association.

Lindemeier is the Lincoln County Public Defender. He is widely respected for his persuasive presentations in the courtroom. During his career, he has tackled, often successfully, the toughest defense cases.

The Don Fiedler award is presented each year for lifetime achievements. Fiedler was a respected, compassionate advocate who worked tirelessly to protect the rights of the accused, the association said.

Fiedler died in 2008 and each year since, the NCDAA recognizes an attorney who exemplifies his spirit.

In presenting the award, Jim Mowbray of the Nebraska Criminal Defense Attorney's Association said, "Bob has not only dedicated his professional life to helping this organization, but also to helping other lawyers become better lawyers. He was a founding member of the Community Corrections Council, he was a founding commissioner and is now the Chair of the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy; he's a past president of NCDAA. He volunteers without hesitation. He is certainly deserving of this award."

The award states: "In recognition of his tireless dedication, boundless compassion and battle-honed wisdom, the NCDAA bestows this gesture of gratitude upon this honoree for his dedication to preserving the rights of the citizen accused. May we all learn from his example."

“I’m very honored to be mentioned in the same paragraph as Don Fiedler,” Lindemeier told the Bulletin. “I’m humbled by it.”

Past winners include Fiedler (2008,) who practiced in Omaha; Tom Riley and Dennis Keefe (2009) of Omaha and Lincoln, Clarence Mock (2010) of Oakland, Omaha and Lincoln; Jim Mowbray (2011) of the statewide Commission for Public Advocacy with headquarters in Lincoln, and David Kimball (2012) of Seward.

Fiedler “was at once gentle in tone of voice but firm in his belief that criminal defense lawyers have an obligation to pour our hearts, souls, and guts out for our clients for every stage of representation, including trial,” Fiedler's fellow attorney Jon Katz once wrote.
