Thefts from cars has become more common of late in North Platte, but police believe they have put an end to the recent rash of thefts with the arrest of two suspects Tuesday morning.

At around 4:45 a.m. police responded to a report of suspicious persons at the North Platte Community Daycare, 1210 So. Ash, called in by an observant citizen who saw two suspicious men in that area, police spokesman Rodney Brown said.

A search for the men ended up near the Platte River Mall where police found two 18-year-old men, K.C. Betancud, 18 and Logan Reed, 18, were in possession of stolen property that linked them to multiple thefts.

Officers traced stolen property, cash and prescription drugs to previously reported thefts at McDonald and Williams, at the 1200 block of S. Ash, at the 1100 block of S. Buffalo, at the 2100 block of W. Leota and at 1300 S. Carr.

Betancud and Reed were arrested and jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center. Each man faces five counts of theft by unlawful taking as well as one count of felony possession of a controlled substance, Brown said.

The investigation is ongoing, and the men may have been involved in other recent thefts from vehicles, Brown said.
