AMHERST-With just over a minute left, Amherst scored a touchdown to defeat Wallace 50-44 in Class D2 state quarterfinals on Nov. 12.

The Broncos (10-1) took an early 14-0 lead in the game. But Wallace (9-2) came back in the second half and took the lead in the fourth quarter.

But Amherst got the touchdown it needed at the end to move on.

The Broncos will play Stuart in the state semifinals on Nov. 19.

The 2013 run to the quarterfinals for Wallace is tied for the best in school history.

In 2006 and 2007, the Wildcats also made the quarterfinals. In 2006, Wallace defeated Mullen and Lynch in the first two rounds before falling 50-36 to Chambers.

The following year, Wallace was victorious over Banner County and Bertrand in the first and second round. But the Wildcats lost 52-26.

They also qualified for the state playoffs in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 but they lost in the first round all four times.

This year, the Wildcats, coached by Gary Hager, won each of their first seven games.

In those seven games, the Wallace defense recorded four shutouts against South Platte, Creek Valley, Paxton and Hayes Center..

But on Oct. 18, Wallace lost 42-36 to Medicine Valley in the final game of the regular season.

But despite the loss, the Wildcats were still the No. 1-seed in the western division of the D2 bracket.

They beat Brady for a second time on the season, 44-8, in the first round.
