Six North Platte Public School educators have been awarded school foundation REACH grants totaling $7,000 to educate North Platte students. The money will help develop reading, music, art and cooking programs, finance a trip for government students to Washington D.C. and buy better workout equipment for Adams Middle School.
The grants were awarded to:
Patti Saner, NPHS: ProStart Competition
Grant funds will enable NPHS students to train and compete with other high school students at a regional level. NPHS is in its second year of the ProStart Foundations of Food Service Management and Culinary Arts class. This class helps high school students develop into tomorrowˇ¦s restaurant and food service industry leaders.
Josh Bruck, NPHS: Close Up Program
Help send 30 NPHS to Washington, D.C. as part of the new NPHS Close-Up Program. The Close Up Program is an opportunity for students to experience their government in action. From visits to famous monuments, memorials, and institutions, to meetings with their Congressional delegation on Capitol Hill, Close Up students get a first-hand look at the American political system and consider what role they, as students, play in our democracy.
Amy Black, Osgood: Golden Sower Book Club at Osgood
A book club for fourth and fifth graders at Osgood that is centered around the Golden Sower award nominee books. Students will read the assigned books on their own time and then meet to discuss and do activities with the books twice a month.
Heather Hupfer, Lincoln: Elementary Art Club
„hAn organized after school Art Club that will be sponsored and chaperoned by Lincoln Elementary teachers and support staff and attended by 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students.
This Art Club will provide the opportunity, additional time outside of the regular school day, a safe setting, and a variety of arts and crafts materials for students who are interested in exploring art.
Janette Kammerer, Eisenhower and Washington: Sing Around Nebraska
Increase music abilities and talents by participating in the Sing Around Nebraska event in Hershey. This biannual event for students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades provides an opportunity for honor music students to work with a guest clinician. The event also provides students with quality childrenˇ¦s choral repertoire and helps districts build a music library of such music.
Teresa Deterding, Tom Callaghan and Dale Hall, Adams Middle School: Upper body strength and improvement plan
Purchase floor mats and coordinating safety racks to allow safe and proper sit-ups and push-ups with Adams Middle School students, improving upper body and abdominal strengths in more than 700 students.
"The North Platte Public School Foundation is proud to support our educators by recently giving over $7,000 in Educator REACH grants to further improve educational opportunities for North Platte students," Foundation Executive Director Jackie Lucas said.
"The innovation and research that applicants use to support their REACH grant requests show that our educators are dedicated to making a difference. These visionaries are looking for new ways to motivate and educate students at all levels of ability and interest," she said.
The NPPS Foundation is proud to support educators in their efforts to inspire student learning through innovative programs, Lucas said.
To date, the NPPS Foundation has granted $178,949 in REACH grants, supporting students at all schools in the district.
