Some songs are classic because they were composed during the classical period in music history, such as Symphony #94 in G Major by Franz Joseph Haydn.

Others are classic because they have survived for hundreds of years and are still regularly performed like many of the works of George F. Handel.

Still other songs are considered classic even though they have been written recently. The songs of the Beatles, for example, are classic rock from the contemporary era.

Everything in the Nov. 10 concert of the Sandhills Symphony will be classic. Director Carmen Allen has chosen “That’s Classic!” as the theme. Members of the symphony have been rehearsing for several weeks in order to share favorites such as Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Leonard Bernsteins West Side Story.

Those two compositions are considered classics in part because they are based on the original Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet.

The concert will take place at North Platte High School starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. Admission is free and those of all ages are encouraged to attend.

“That’s Classic!” will include something for everyone. Satchmo provides a tribute to Louis Armstrong, the popular themes from The Empire Strikds Back will resonate with Star Wars followers and Finlandia by Jean Sibelius will seem familiar even if you don’t recognize most classic compositions.

The Sandhills Symphony includes instrumentalists from North Platte and many of the surrounding communities. They have been presenting orchestral music for southwestern Nebraska for more than 50 years.

Following the concert a reception will be held in the commons room at the high school for all guests.
