4-Hers fight hungerTell North Platte what you think

The Horse Luck 4-H Club, working to fight hunger, will hold food demonstrations at Gary’s Super Foods in North Platte on Nov. 3 and again on Nov. 10 to help raise awareness about hunger in Nebraska.

The club has received a grant in partnership between the Invest an Acre initiative, the Howard G. Buffet Foundation and National 4-H.

Club members will share how to prepare family meals from scratch versus packaged meals. Preparing dishes from scratch takes a little more time but provides more flexibility in adapting the recipe, more flavor and affordable serving sizes for the entire family, they say.

The Horse Luck 4-H Club hopes to make a difference in Lincoln County by hosting food demonstrations to raise awareness, while sharing what they learned in 4-H.

“Farmers produce more food today than five years ago; in five years we’ll produce more. People are hungry, not because there aren’t enough farmers or food, but because they don’t have access to it or can’t afford it,” said Howard G. Buffet, President of Howard G. Buffet Foundation. “There’s also an estimated $3 billion worth of food wasted because farmers either can’t get labor to harvest it or it doesn’t look perfect enough for store shelves.”

The Howard G. Buffet Foundation recognizes that there are some Americans that have no idea where their next meal comes from.

Invest An Acre hopes that direct donations or hunger awareness will cause people to take a second and think about the impacts of hunger in their local community.
