Ewing Man convicted of double murderTell North Platte what you think

Matthew Hinrichsen, 33, of Ewing was found guilty of murdering newlyweds Alex and Victoria Lee Vargas of Neligh, Nebraska Attorney General Bruning announced Monday. Hinrichsen was convicted by jury in Antelope County District Court of two counts of first degree murder, one count of possessing a fire arm while committing a felony and one count of using a fire arm to commit a felony.

He faces a possibility of two life sentences. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 28.

“This man entered the Vargas home, shot and killed Alex and beat Victoria to death before setting the home ablaze,” Bruning said. “Today’s conviction helps to ensure he is held accountable for his crimes.”

On Dec. 8, 2012, the bodies of Alex and Victoria Lee Vargas were found in a burned mobile home in rural Antelope County. Autopsies showed Alex Vargas died from three gunshot wounds to his midsection and Victoria Lee Vargas died from traumatic blunt force trauma to the head.

Hinrischsen, an ex-boyfriend of Victoria’s, was arrested the same day at his parent’s home. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in January 2013, Bruning said.

Assistant Attorney Generals Corey O’Brien and Sandra Allen are handling the case, Bruning said.
