The Wallace volleyball team fought hard to defeat Maywood Monday in four sets in the opening round of the Republican Athletic Conference tournament, then lost to Paxton in four.
Wallace dominated Maywood in the two opening sets, 25-15 and 25-10, but Maywood came back to get a 25-22 win in the pivotal third set. Wallace had to fight hard to win the fourth set in overtime, 31-29.
In the next match, Paxton cruised to a 25-16 win in the first set, but Wallace made the next set much closer in at 25-22 loss. Wallace then earned at 26-24 win in the third set before dropping the fourth, 25-11.
"I thought that the girls had some really good moments, along with some rough patches," Wallace coach Elizabeth Strand said. "That's bound to happen when you play basically eight straight sets of volleyball.
Next, Wallace finishes the regular season Tuesday against Wauneta-Palisade, then will begin sub-districts the following week.
