The Mid-Plains Community College Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Club will sponsor a Punkin’ Chunkin’ competition at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Golden Spike Tower’s Pumpkin Patch.
During the contest, teams will launch 10-pound pumpkins for distance.
“Three teams from the college and one from North Platte High School are planning to compete,” said NPCC Physics and Engineering Instructor Jared Daily.
“We are planning to hold this each October and to invite local high schools and businesses to join us next year.”
According to Daily, junior and senior students at local high schools and area businesses were asked to design and build pumpkin-catapulting machines for the competition.
Designs included detailed drawings of the machines with all relevant dimensions and materials specified. Once the designs were submitted, they were reviewed and approved for safety.
Daily said prizes will be awarded for best single distance and for best average distance. There will also be prizes for the runner-up in each category.
