A California man and a Texas woman were arrested near North Platte Saturday and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

The couple David Evans and Felicia MacDowell were stopped for speeding at 8:53 a.m. on Interstate-80 about three miles west of North Platte.

They were eastbound in a 2012 Chevy Impala doing 87 miles-an-hour in a 75 mph zone, according to a Nebraska State Patrol report.

The trooper asked for permission to search the vehicle and was denied, so a drug detection dog was brought to the scene. The dog indicated drugs were onboard, and a search turned up 12.4 pounds of marijuana in a duffle bag in the trunk, NSP spokeswoman Deb Collins said.

The driver, Evans, 29, is from Newcastle, Calif. and MacDowell, 23, is from Converse, Texas, Collins said.

Evans and MacDowell were taken to the Lincoln County Jail. Each of them is held on a bond of $25,000.
