Sponsorship forms are available for people who desire to purchase a holiday wreath to be placed on a grave marker at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Wreaths will be placed on Dec. 14. The registration deadline is Nov. 22.
The VFW Post 1504 in North Platte makes this an annual project. The tradition began in 2007 when the Worcester family, along with veterans and others who had helped with the annual Christmas wreathe ceremony in Arlington, formed “Wreaths Across America” to support other groups around the country who want to do the same.
This nonprofit organization continues the Arlington tradition as part of its mission to Remember, Honor and Teach.
Last year, Wreaths Across America and the national network of volunteers laid more than 420,000 memorial wreaths in more than 800 locations in the United States and beyond.
The task was accomplished with the help of 1,382 fundraising groups, many corporate contributions and donations of trucking, shipping, and thousands of helping hands.
The annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Ma. to Arlington National Cemetery is known as the world's largest veteran's parade, stopping at schools, monuments, veteran's homes and communities along the way.
Forms are available at the Bulletin office, 1300 East 4th.
To purchase a wreath, monies and forms are due by Nov. 22 to VFW Post 1504, Commander Larry Steinbrink, 2100 East 4th Street, North Platte, NE 69101.
Wreaths are $15 each. Make checks payable to Wreaths Across America.
