Thirty-eight honorary bricks have been installed in the Walk of Honor at North Platte's 20th Century Veterans Memorial even though they once disappeared.

The bricks mysteriously vanished in late April after they were delivered to the Pawnee Assisted Living Hotel. The shipment was delivered to the front desk, which was standard procedure, but they were no longer there when the secretary of the memorial tried to pick them up.

Each brick, engraved with the name of a veteran, was insured and were recast, said secretary Wilma Salisbury of the memorial. The bricks were placed in section D2, on rows 9, 10 and 11, of the memorial.

More than 6,000 memorial bricks are now installed in the Walk of Honor, with room for another 1,900, Salisbury said. Any United States veteran from any time can be honored with a brick, which cost $150 each. Bricks are tax deductible.

The 20th Century Veterans Memorial office has moved to the North Platte-Lincoln County Visitors Bureau at 315 W. Eugene. The Pawnee Hotel closed in September.

The office is now open from 1-5 p.m. on Thursdays for in-person orders. The phone number is 532-6579. Salisbury can also be reached at 308-696-2461. The visitorís center has information during business hours Monday-Friday, and information is also available from the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation at 120 N. Dewey, Salisbury said.
