Obamacare website goes offlineTell North Platte what you think

The federal government's official website that accepts applicants into Obamacare went offline over the weekend so technicians could make repairs.

The website -- healthcare.gov -- was flooded with 8.4 million unique visits from opening Tuesday until late Friday.

Only 1 person in 100 was able to get all the way through the process and successfully enroll in a new healthcare program, according to a CNBC report.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said traffic on the website and at the call center continues to be high.

Everyone is expected to have health insurance by Jan. 1, according to the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Registrations were to begin Oct. 1, with a deadline of Dec. 15.

Not only does the government website accept applications, it must also link with social security, Medicare and internal revenue service information to verify registrants' age, location, health coverage and income, and route them toward the proper insurance offerings.

Consultant Dan Mendelson told CNBC the trouble is not due to high traffic, but to systems that aren't working. Too many applications are deficient, he said.

The website must handle registrants from 36 states, including Nebraska, that didn't set up an insurance exchange of its own.

And, there are an estimated 43 million uninsured people nationwide. Millions more people can shop the exchange if they choose to, if it is working.
