Sandbags along Philip

North Platte property owners can dispose of the sand in bags that were hurriedly placed Sunday on the south side of North Platte.

City workers will start picking up the bags Monday.

Some residents contacted the Bulletin to see if it's okay to use some of the sand to fill in a low spot in their backyard or some other place.

City Administrator Jim Hawks said Friday morning that he sees no problems if people want to dispose of the sandbags themselves.

Thousands of sandbags were placed along such streets as Philip, McDonald and William for several blocks on Sept. 22 as flood water backed up in the streets through storm sewer drains.

The water was knee deep in some curbs, and hundreds of people spontaneously joined together to sandbag the curbs as the water rose.
