They will host a cleanup in Original Town from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 12, starting at the Berean Church.

Businesses are asked to donate money for each pound of materials collected. The goal is raise enough money to help buy banners for light poles in Original Town and the hardware to hang them.

Each piece of hardware for one banner is about $100, organizers say.

The banners are part a beautification project in Original Town. Refurbished stop light structures will be used to decorate the U.S. Highway 83 corridor.

Volunteers and businesses are asked to join in and donate.

For more information, contact organizer Michael Phillips at 535-2646. Phillips works at Adams Bank and Trust.

Banners, art

Years ago, 7-8 tall decorative structures housed the stoplights at downtown North Platte intersections.

Some of the stoplights were removed in 2006, others in 2009. The structures set in a city lot. They were recently recovered, and thanks to a grant from the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation and the support of local businesses who adopted a structure, the structures will be restored and refurbished.

TK Welding of North Platte is doing the sandblasting, repairing and painting.

They will stand in businesses lots such as Kwik Stop, Nebraskaland National Bank, and Dollar General.

This is a step aimed at beautifying Original Town and the north U.S. Highway 83 corridor, a highly traveled route through North Platte.

Also, banners will be hung on light posts along the corridor, incorporating the structure's grate work design. And, KNPLCB hosted an art competition for Lincoln Schools Kids Klub group, and the top four entries will be displayed on banners that will hang on light posts along the corridor, said Holly Carlini of KNPLCB.
