The cars were loaded with intermodal freight containers. The train was eastbound from California, heading to Chicago.

The derailment occurred at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tracks in both directions were damaged and remained closed Sunday. Crews worked through Saturday night to clean up and repair the damage. They hoped to open one-way traffic by 5 p.m. Sunday.

Forty trains were held up, waiting for the lines to open. Another 20 trains were detoured to other routes, Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said.

Davis said 2,000 feet of rails were torn up in one direction and 800 feet in the other direction. He said the cause is under investigation.
