Mail: Honor for forgotten soldiersTell North Platte what you think

It was our honor as Grand Commander and Madam State President of the Nebraska Military Order of the Cootie to be present at the first interment of "forgotten" veterans in Nebraska.

On Friday, Sept. 6, the Missing in America Project of Nebraska provided its first such interment with full military honors at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.

The three veterans laid to rest were Robert Earl Woods (1947-2011), an Army Vietnam veteran; Dennis Lee Townsend (1947-2010), a Navy Vietnam Veteran and John Henry Mcintosh (1934-2011), an Army Veteran who served in Korea.

These veterans needed America to step forward and ensure that they were buried with honor. They needed America to show their thanks for their service.

Without them we would not have the freedoms we enjoy today.

Thanks to MIAP volunteers Bill Henry and Larry Schaber of eastern Nebraska and the Patriot Guard Riders who escorted the remains of three veterans from Omaha to Fort McPherson, they now rest in peace with the honor and respect they deserve.

By Chuck and Arliss Matthews, North Platte

(Editor's note: The remains of the three deceased veterans were not claimed by family members.)
