Teenage stabber asks for juvenile court trialTell North Platte what you think

Jordan Baker, 16, of Hastings, facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder, appeared in district court for a hearing on moving his case to juvenile court.

Baker is the younger of two teenage boys who are accused of stabbing two employees at the Nebraska Youth Center in North Platte on July 9 and stealing a car to escape.

They were apprehended later that night, fleeing on I-80 near Lexington.

Lincoln County Attorney Rebecca Harling objected to moving Baker’s trial to juvenile court. Harling said that state statutes clearly say a crime committed with aggression, violence, weapons and pre-meditation is to be tried as an adult charge.

Harling cited a statement made by the 18-year-old co-defendant Keenan Lambert, that the intent of both defendants was to “mortally injure the victims.”

Harling pointed out the multiple wounds, some serious. She said a juvenile court could only sentence Baker to six months at a youth rehabilitation center and then to another group home, where he could intimidate and endanger others, as he did in the stabling in North Platte.

Harling said he should be tried as an adult to insure an appropriate punishment for the crime.

Defense attorney Pat Hays pointed out that Baker has no serious record, and he said Baker’s age should put the case into juvenile court.

Lincoln County District Judge Donald Rowlands took the arguments under advisement and said he would issue a decision within a week.

Lambert has not been to district court yet.
