Softball: North Platte 2-4 for the weekTell North Platte what you think

The North Platte High softball team went 0-4 on the road last week against two strong Class A teams, No. 5 Grand Island and No. 3 Lincoln Southeast, but got back on track with two wins Saturday at Cozad.

The Lady Dawgs lost 2-0 and 8-1 to Grand Island on Tuesday and were shut out, 5-0 and 8-0, by Lincoln Southeast on Thursday.

On Saturday North Platte competed in the Cozad Double Dual and won both games by the mercy rule.

North Platte (11-6) shut the door early on Minden Saturday, capturing a 12-2 victory in game one.

The 12 runs in the first three innings allowed North Platte to put the game away early. A two-run single by Mikenzi Wiseman, a two-run triple by Christina Yoshida, and a RBI single by Jenny Keck during the second inning helped North Platte put runs on the board.

North Platte built its lead with six more runs in the third. Rylie Cotton started the inning with a double, bringing home Sally Hengen. That was followed up by Kylie Engleman's single, scoring Cotton and Willow Chitty.

In the second game, Cozad had a tough outing and North Platte dominated, 9-1, in five innings.

Wiseman drove in two runs on one hit for North Platte with a homer in the third inning.

Keck had an impressive outing against Cozad's lineup. Cozad managed just three hits off Keck, who allowed one earned run, walked none, and struck out one during her five innings of work.

North Platte never trailed after scoring two runs in the second on a two-run single by Hengen. The Lady Dawgs added three more in the bottom of the third. A double by Chitty ignited the offense, scoring Hannah Hays. That was followed up by Wiseman's two-run home run, bringing home Chitty.

North Platte tacked on another four runs in the fifth. Keck's single got things going, scoring Hays and Chitty. Hengen followed with a double, scoring Shayla Kummer and Abby Jones.

North Platte is in action at home Tuesday in a doubleheader against Kearney (7-9 in Class A.)
