One car turned into another Wednesday afternoon at a downtown Jeffers St. intersection, marking the third accident since traffic lights were removed there.

Ronnie Weigel, Jr. 37, drove his pickup across two lanes and turned left into a Dodge Dynasty driven by Delicia Mata, 33, of North Platte, at Third and Jeffers.

Mata's car was coming through the intersection in the opposite direction Weigel said he didnít see Mataís car when he started to turn, according to a North Platte police report.

The accident occurred at 5:05 p.m.

No one was injured. Mataís car sustained an estimated $2,000 in damage and Weigelís pickup, $1,500, the accident report said.

The traffic light at the intersection was removed Aug. 1, by order of the Nebraska Department of Roads. A traffic light was also removed at the intersection two blocks away, at Fifth and Jeffers,

District 6 Engineer Gary Thayer said the removals would make Jeffers St. better for travelers and Sheriff Jerome Kramer said fewer accidents were expected on the busy street, which is part of a border-to-border north-south highway Ė U.S. 83.

Kramer said rear-end accidents on Jeffers were a problem when the lights were in place.

At the time, critics predicted there would be more accidents, in part because buildings at the corners of both intersections make it hard for motorists on Fifth and Third to see approaching traffic on Jeffers.
