Twice named to American Bus Association’s list of top 100 events, Rail Fest rolls into North Platte on Sept. 20–22.

The highlight of the festival are bus tours of Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard, the world’s largest railroad classification yard.

This is the only time of the year that the public is allowed on the property of this massive, 24/7 transportation operation.

Much more is planned for the weekend -- tours of select locomotives in Union Pacific’s Heritage Fleet, exhibits and demonstrations of railroad jobs, tools and equipment, model railroad show, non-stop live entertainment, children’s events and food, craft and railroad memorabilia vendors.

Special features include a cemetery tour featuring North Platte’s infamous past, and the heartwarming story of North Platte’s World War II home front effort in “The Canteen Spirit Experience.”

North Platte earned its “Rail Town USA” designation (made official by an act of Congress) by more than just Rail Fest. Visitors can see the Golden Spike Tower and Visitor Center with an 8-story view of Bailey Yard and participate in or watch the all-new handcar races scheduled Sept. 21.

At the Cody Park Railroad Museum, an historic Challenger steam locomotive is available to climb in, on and around.

Bailey Yard bus tours are free but tickets must be reserved. There is an admission charge to the Golden Spike Tower, Cemetery Tour and Canteen Spirit Experience.
