At 4:53 p.m., Lincoln County Sheriff's deputies were called to the emergency room at Great Plains Regional Medical Center, where the boy was in the emergency room with a gunshot wound in his right foot.

Deputies talked with the boy and his mother and discovered the gun was a .22 caliber, single shot rifle, according to a sheriff's statement.

According to the statement, all guns at the home were stored and locked except the .22 rifle, which was hidden on a top shelf of a closet, with the ammunition stored elsewhere.

The boy, who has not been named, and a couple of his friends decided they wanted to shoot birds near the boy's home north of North Platte. The boy knew where the gun was stored. He retrieved it, managed to get it out of the house, and the boys took it to a homemade fort about a half-mile from the house, according to the statement.

None of the boys had much experience with firearms but they managed to load it. When the 11-year-old picked up the gun by the butt stock and trigger, it went off and hit him in the foot, the statement said.

The victim’s mother was called to help and the boy was transported to the hospital.

No charges were filed. As of this time, the shooting is considered accidental.
