VB: St. Pat's sweeps Perkins CountyTell North Platte what you think

The North Platte St. Pat's volleyball team started the season on Thursday night with a 25-11, 25-13, 25-16 sweep of Perkins County at the McGahan Activities Center.

Lady Irish coach Shelly Byrn, who won her 200th game as coach, said she was satisfied by the outcome.

"I am happy with it, you're always happy when you win," Byrn said. "You can't leave the gym unhappy."

St. Pat's, who is ranked No. 1 in Class D1 to start the season, established themselves by taking an early 10-2 lead over Perkins County on their way to a first set victory.

Byrn said that she was unsure how some of the new varsity players would handle themselves on Thursday but they seemed to handle it well. For that she credited her three seniors - Brittany Lawrence, Zandra Carlini and Bree Saner.

"I thought we still had a few nerves especially with our younger players," she said. "But I thought they did well out there and that's a tribute to our three seniors."

In the second set, St. Pat's scored the first 10 points with Saner serving and the Irish never looked back from there.

The third set was the most competitive for the overmatched Plainswomen from Grant. St. Pat's took an 8-3 lead early. But Perkins County came within one at 9-8 after Lila Konecky served for three straight points.

The Lady Irish broke away shortly thereafter with Saner running off seven straight points for an 18-9 lead. St. Pat's then finished Perkins County off to give Byrn her 200th win.

It is fitting that Byrn reached that milestone against Perkins County. Her first win came in her Irish coaching debut against the same school a decade ago at the McGahan Activities Center.
