A young North Platte man was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree sexual assault after a teenage mom came to authorities, looking for money to help raise her year-old baby.

Police spokesman Rodney Brown said the investigation began Aug. 7 at the prompting of the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office, regarding a 15-year-old girl who allegedly had sexual intercourse with an adult.

The girl, now 17, requested help at the Lincoln County Child Support Office for financial support for her year-old child. An earlier paternity test indicated that Jamie Johnston, now 24, is the biological father.

Nebraska state law requires minors to be 16 years-old to legally have consensual sex. In this case, the teenager was 15 and Johnston was 22 at the time the baby was conceived.

A police investigator questioned Johnston on Wednesday. He was arrested and taken to jail.

He is charged with first-degree sexual assault, and his bond is set at $100,000.
