Bond is set at $500,000 for a California woman who lost her son and landed in Lincoln County Jail for carrying more than 20 pounds of cocaine in her car.

Nichole M. Rhoads, 25, of Canoga Park, Calif. was arraigned Tuesday in Lincoln County Court, charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Canoga Park is part of Los Angeles.

Conservatively, the value of 20 pounds of cocaine is around $275,000, according to a Wikipedia analysis.

Rhoads told the court she would hire her own attorney. She faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Rhoads was traveling east on I-80 about three miles west of North Platte when she was stopped around 3 p.m. Friday by a Nebraska State Trooper for a traffic violation.

The trooper found 20.6 pounds of cocaine in a hidden compartment in her 2007 Nissan.

Rhoads’ son, age 5, was with her. He was placed in protective custody with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to await the arrival of Rhoads’ parents who are coming from California to get the boy.
