The final drawing for the Mid-Plains Community College 1972 El Camino Super Sport Clone is approaching. Ticket sales have been brisk but there are still some left to purchase. The car will be on display Wednesday at Bob Spady Buick-GMC, Cohagen Battery Store on Thursday and at the Holiday Inn Express on Friday.
Any remaining tickets will be sold at Colonel Cody’s Cruise Show and Shine in downtown North Platte starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7.
The drawing for the car will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Raffle tickets are $10 each and no more than 6,000 will be sold. Proceeds from the raffle will be used for student scholarships and to purchase the next raffle car.
According to college spokesman Chuck Salestrom, a record number of tickets were sold when the car was on display at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island last week.
“We were very well received at the fair,” he said. “They loved the hotrod and we had many opportunities to talk to folks about the college and all it has to offer.”
This year’s car is powered by a naturally aspirated (carbureted) 454 Big Block Chevy engine, bolted to a TH 400 Turbo Automatic Transmission and coupled to a 355 Posi-trac rear-end. Special features include vintage air conditioning, power steering, power disc/drum brakes and air ride suspension.
The hot rod’s exterior sports a vinyl top and Rhino Liner box protection wrapped up in “Hugger Orange” basecoat/clearcoat paint by PPG that was donated by Mid Plains Auto Finishes. Pin-striping, decals and graphics by Dave Smith add the perfect finishing touch.
Tickets are available wherever the car is on display and at the following locations in North Platte: Bob Spady Buick-GMC, Cohagen Battery Store, Grandma's Memories Antiques & Collectibles, Isabelle’s Auction House, A.J. Janas, Pat Smith, Jody’s Auto Sales, Larry’s Barber Shop, Modern Muffler, The Car Doctor, Twin River Body Shop, the NPCC North and South Campus Welcome Center’s and at the McCook Community College Welcome Center.
