Troopers to stress seat belts at football gamesTell North Platte what you think

“Are You Putting Me On?" That’s the question Nebraska State Patrol Troopers and mascot trooper Buck L. Up will ask as they head to football fields in eastern and central Nebraska this fall to promote seat belt usage among teen drivers.

It's called the “Friday Night Lights” initiative and it is designed to help reduce serious injury and fatality crashes involving teen drivers by providing them with firsthand knowledge of what can happen when you don’t buckle up.

Fans at high school football games from Omaha to Gibbon will have the opportunity to experience a ride in the NSP Seat Belt Convincer and/or view a presentation of the Rollover Simulator, thanks in part to a $14,850 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.

“Far too often teen drivers are seriously injured or killed in crashes in which seat belts were not in use,” said Col. David Sankey, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “This initiative is designed to get the message across in a positive atmosphere, re-enforcing the message that seat belts save lives.”

Through a partnership with AAA Nebraska/Cornhusker Motor Club Foundation, teens will also be given the opportunity to take home a tee-shirt. During breaks in the football action, troopers will use a tee-shirt shooter to catapult tee-shirts with a seat belt safety message to football fans.

Col. David Sankey said, “We hope teens will wear their t-shirts with pride and share the seat belt safety message with others.”
