Joshua L. Reece, 31, of North Platte was arraigned in Lincoln County Court Aug. 16 for possession of an ounce of marijuana with intent to distribute.

His bond was set at $50,000 and he told the court he would hire his own attorney.

Lincoln County Judge Kent Turnbull asked Deputy Lincoln County Attorney Austen Leighty if only an ounce of pot was found, why prosecutors were pressing for a distribution charge and asking for a high bond.

Leighty said when Reece was stopped by a Nebraska State Trooper on East 10th for a traffic violation, the trooper found an ounce of marijuana, baggies and a scale during a search and Reece had admitted he planned to sell some of the pot.

By 3 p.m. Friday, Reece had paid the required 10 percent and was released, according to sheriff’s records.

Also, Christina Marie Schrader, 33, of McCook faced arraignment Friday for theft by shoplifting-more than $500.

Because of prior convictions for shoplifting, the charge is a felony with a possible sentence of five years imprisonment.

Employees at Wal-Mart said they saw Schrader leave the store with a loaded cart of food and household items without paying. Officers were advised that Schrader had fled the store’s parking lot on foot after failing to pay for a cart of merchandise valued at around $550.

Schrader was seen getting into a car and leaving as a passenger in a NE 48 county, black, Oldsmobile Alero, police spokesman Rodney Brown said.

The vehicle was soon located traveling south on U.S. Highway 83 north of Menards in North Platte. An investigative traffic stop was conducted and Schrader was arrested.

Schrader’s record shows a previous charges of shoplifting in Lincoln County in April 2008. Her bond was set at $5,000.
