Around 3:30 p.m. July 30, police went to a home in the 700 block of West B St. to investigate a reported theft. The people living there said they suspected a house guest - Rosenberg, 29 -- had stolen property from them.

Along with jewelry and other personal items, the victims suspected that Rosenberg stole a Hungary 9x18 handgun from the house.

A police investigator later questioned Rosenberg about the handgun, and he learned the handgun was actually seized July 17 as evidence during a search of a home in the 900 block of N. Bailey.

Police determined there was probable cause to charge Rosenberg with being a felon in possession of a firearm - the handgun, and he was jailed.

There was conflicting evidence about the initial theft and police have not established probable cause to charge Rosenberg for theft, police spokesman Rodney Brown said.

Rosenberg's felony conviction was drug distribution in 2006. He served six years in prison at the Big Muddy Correctional Center in Ina, Illinois.

Leeper

On Tuesday, a police investigator questioned Timothy Leeper, 24, about the stolen firearm.

The investigator found probable cause to charge Leeper with possession of the stolen gun when it was recovered on July 17. So, Leeper was arrested and processed at the Lincoln County Detention Center for possession of stolen property–firearm, a felony.
