Rates are tentatively set to increase 5.9 percent, City Administrator Jim Hawks said Wednesday as he presented a preliminary electrical budget to the North Platte City Council.

The city of North Platte expects to buy $24.7 million worth of electricity from the Nebraska Public Power District in the coming fiscal year, and increase of 7.6% from this year.

That is the primary reason for the increase in electrical rates, Hawks said. After negotiations with NPPD, the increase is necessary to continue the long-term agreement with NPPD to buy power.

City sewer and water rates are not expected to increase.

The electrical rate hike would take effect once the city council makes final approval of the new budget.

A public hearing will be held on the budget on Tuesday, Sept. 3 and the council could approve it at a special meeting that has been tentatively scheduled two days later.

The council has until the end of September to approve the annual budget.
