KEARNEY-The North Platte First National Bank Juniors were eliminated from the district tournament on Monday after a 14-2 loss to Hastings.
"We didn't show up ready to play," said Juniors assistant coach Luke Ostergard. "They settled for knowing they were playing at state anyway. Baseball's a simple game. You catch the ball, you throw the ball and you hit the ball and we didn't do any of those."
Hastings came out with a big first inning. Broc Dreher led off with a double off of North Platte pitcher Dominic Martinez. Then Alex Mendoza brought him home with a base hit to left field.
Brooks Asher then doubled to center for another run. Morgan Karloff then reached on an error by Martinez to make it 3-0.
The next three runs for Hastings came due to wildness by Martinez. Matt Krontz and Sam Reimer drew bases loaded walks. Then Dreher reached after he was beaned by a pitch to make it 6-0.
Martinez got out of the inning after that but the damage was done.
North Platte didn't score until the fifth inning. Down 10-0 and needing to score to extend the game, the First Nationals got RBIs by Levi Nekuda and Devan Hovden to score two.
But Hastings answered back with four in the top of the sixth to put the 10-run rule back into effect and North Platte couldn't answer back in the bottom half.
Hastings will play Kearney in the finals on Tuesday while the First Nationals will play at the state tournament as the host team at Bill Wood Field.
