The Nebraska State Patrol has to pay back more than $1 million, plus interest, to a former stripper after they confiscated it more than a year ago during a traffic stop near North Platte.
Trooper Ryan Hayes confiscated the money after he stopped a car for excessive speeding, and then searched it, the Lincoln Journal Star reported Saturday.
Hayes initially said a drug detection dog smelled the odor of drugs on the money, which was bundled in groups of $100 bills.
But the former stripper and her husband claimed the money was her life savings. They said it was all legally earned and taxed, and was intended to open a night club on the east coast.
U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon ruled that the state officials were wrong and the money must be repaid.
