Second quarter business volumes, as measured by total revenue carloads, decreased 1 percent compared to 2012, UP said.

Declines came in agricultural products and intermodal shipments. There were more shipments of chemicals and automobiles than a year ago.

Volumes of industrial products and coal shipments were flat versus 2012.

Union Pacific officials said the company made money on "core pricing gains," including diesel fuel prices that were 3-percent less than a year ago.

The average quarterly diesel fuel price was $3.10 per gallon in the second quarter, the company said.
