A Union Pacific freight train hit a standing train in the middle of the night Monday in Hays, Kan.Officials are still trying to figure out why, KSN television reported Wednesday.
The wreck happened around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, when a 79-car freight train hit the standing train, KSN reported.
At least 12 cars derailed and a fire started on two locomotives after the collision, the report said.
Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said the train’s event recorder could determine how fast the train was traveling when it hit the standing train.
It will take about two weeks to clean up the wreckage, Davis told the television station.
