Alfonso V. Romero, 25 and his wife Melissa, 26, were arrested Thursday and charged with theft of materials a month ago from a construction site near Maxwell.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies found the couple living in a mobile home on the east end of Fremont Slough State Wildlife Area (commonly known as Lake Maui), after they followed up on a Crimestoppers tip, according to a sheriff's statement.

Investigators believe the couple is connected to a large theft June 17 south of Maxwell. Numerous items were taken, including construction and pole climbing equipment, and the trailer containing the equipment was damaged.

Alfonso Romero had several previous warrants for arrest. And the sheriff's office said he admitted to the construction theft and said the equipment was stored in his mobile home.

A search turned up drugs and paraphernalia in the house and two cars parked there, the sheriff said, but drug charges have not yet been filed.

Alfonso was charged with theft and criminal mischief. His wife Melissa Romero was charged with possession of stolen property.
