A father and son team took first place in the second annual 'Perfect Pie' contest during Sutherland's July 4 celebration, with a decadent S'mores Pie.
All four judges overwhelmingly agreed that the rich chocolate, graham cracker and marshmallow creation deserved top honors out of the 13 entries, organizer Barb Baldridge said.
Mike Arensdorf and his four-year-old son Drake won first place and will receive a 20-page, full-color hard-bound book with their picture on the cover, pictures and recipies of the top five pies, plus a special documentation of the parade festivities and pie social, Baldridge said.
Organizer gave special thanks to the community for turning out in record numbers to enjoy more than 50 pies and 12 buckets of homemade ice cream.
Thanks to our judges: George Crosby, Nadine Thompson, Bev Colburn and Don Fleecs; to the Sutherland Chamber for helping promote the event and last minute set-up; to the Sutherland Schools for use of the facilities; to Belle Enderle, Area Manager of Viaero Wireless for supplying and serving bottled ice water.
The event helped to raise more than $1,000 to benefit Pencils & Prayers Preschool, MomsConnect and the Sutherland Legion Auxiliary.
