Rainfall and normal temperatures are keeping the predicted drought at bay, but precipitation continues to lag behind normal.

So far this year, two inches less rain than normal has fallen at the North Platte regional airport/Lee Bird Field, where the National Weather Service keeps measurements.

Only an inch of rain fell at the airport during three thunderstorms from Friday through Monday.

So far in June, 2 inches of rain has fallen at the airport. The total precipitation for the year is 8.11 inches -- 2.14 inches below normal but a half-inch more than a year ago.

The average temperatures so far are normal, a sharp change from last year when Lincoln County and most of Nebraska suffered from heat. During June 2012, the average daily high temperature was 92 degrees in North Platte. This year the average high in June was 83.

According to a series of reports from spotters with the Twin Platte Natural Resource District, the heaviest rain during the weekend was 2.6 inches six miles northwest of Hershey.

Rainfall amounts decreased as the storm moved past North Platte. An inch-and-a-half fell six miles northeast of North Platte, but only 10-20 hundredths five miles south-southeast of North Platte.

Other parts of Lincoln County received from a 0.5-1.5 inches of rain from Friday-Monday, June 21-24, according the reports from Sutherland, Wallace and Wellfleet.
