Union Pacific Railroad's legendary steam locomotive No. 844 will arrive in North Platte late Friday as it travels from Council Bluffs, Iowa to its home base in Cheyenne, Wyo.
No. 844 has been on display across from TD Ameritrade Omaha stadium during the college baseball world series championship games.
No. 844 will be parked overnight downtown along Front St.
Travel and stops: when and where
• Wednesday, June 26 - Omaha, Neb. to Council Bluffs, Iowa.
• Friday, June 28 - Council Bluffs, Iowa to North Platte.
• Saturday, June 29 - North Platte to Cheyenne.
A Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) transmitter was installed on one of the railcars that travel with No. 844. The GPS system has been integrated with a map on UP’s Web site at www.up.com.
Enter "Steam" in the search box on the homepage for a shortcut to the map. Web site visitors will be able to access route maps with varying amounts of detail which are updated every 5 minutes showing No. 844’s location.
No. 844 was the last steam engine built for Union Pacific that remains in operation. Union Pacific operates a 32,000-mile railroad network.
