The red-hot, heated racing action lit up the night sky June 11 and would have made its namesake proud during the first annual Buffalo Bill Wild West Challenge that was held at the Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte.

Earning a trip to the winners circle was easier said than done during the first ever special event during the 2013 Nebraskaland Days Celebration; up to the task were Cole Hodges, R.C. Heil, Casey Werkmeister and Austin Davis.

Starting on the pole was very advantageous for Ogallala, Nebraska hotshoe Cole Hodges as he led from start to finish and held off all challenges and endured numerous yellow flags to win the IMCA Modified and BST Feature event.

Coming from his third row starting position to key an eye on the leader, was Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte, who finished in the runner-up position when the checkered flag was thrown. Making his first appearance of the 2013 season to the 3/8 mile oval was Cale Osborn of Cozad, with favorable results in finishing third overall. Ryan Gaylord of Golden, Colorado and North Platte’s Dan Carl rounded out the top five finishers. Heat race winner Jeremy Frenier of Ft. Morgan, Colorado and Maxwell, Nebraska’s Charley Brown held top five positions until a late race incident handicapped both drivers hot rods from finishing the race.

Keeping away from traffic and staying near the front early, RC Heil of North Platte was able to snag the lead on lap two and never look back to claim top honors in the IMCA Northern Sport Modified Feature. Heat race winners Terry Dressel of North Platte and Sutherland’s Henry Henderson continued their hot streak after picking up the early evening victories in finishing on the podium in second and third, respectively in the Feature. In a heated battle for top five positions, Jeremy Halouska of North Platte and Bryan Herrick of Curtis, Nebraska rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively. Lance Brandt of Linden, Colorado started his night off right with a heat race win.

Knowing the fast way around the Lincoln County Raceway oval was valuable for Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Nebraska as he garnered the lead on the fifth circuit from his fifth row starting position and cruised to an easy victory in the IMCA Stock Car Feature. Casey’s brother Kyle Werkmeister, also of Maywood started one row back, in the sixth row and drove his way into the top five and finished second overall. Winning their heat races and then driving the wheels off their hot rods into the top five were Imperial, Nebraska’s Justin Bussell and Perry Meisner of Garden City, Kansas as they took home third and fourth place accolades. Casey Woken of Ogallala, Nebraska started in the eighth row and was able to work his magic through the field to finish fifth.

Continuing his hot streak at the North Platte oval, Austin Davis of Benkelman led the final five laps to pull into the winners circle in the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature. Pacing the field in the early going was Brady Weinman of Arnold, Nebraska for the initial six laps. Heat race winner Tiffany Bittner drove into the lead on the seventh lap and was checking out on the rest of the field before falling victim to a bug under the hood that forced her to retire from the feature and relinquish the lead to Davis. Recording consistent laps throughout the feature, earned Chuck Ledbetter of Loomis, Nebraska a second place finish.

Amherst, Nebraska’s Ethan Kenney avoided incident and his efforts paid off to the tune of a third place finish. Scoring top five accolades was Colton Pfieffer of Stockton, Kansas and Andrew Baumgardner of North Platte in fourth and fifth overall.
