Carl J. McKinney, 26, of North Platte was in Lincoln County Court June 20 facing charges of assaulting an officer and felony arson.

Deputy Lincoln County Attorney Austen Leighty offered to let McKinney plead to reduced charges of misdemeanor assault of an officer and misdemeanor arson.

McKinney accepted the deal and pled guilty.

Lincoln County Judge Kent Turnbull didn’t seem to agree with the reduced charge of assault of an officer, because the assault involved blood and saliva.

Turnbull ordered a pre-sentence investigation and scheduled McKinney to return Aug. 8.

The arson charge stemmed from a fire at a mobile home in the 2000 block of W. 16th in early May. At around 11 p.m. May 11, police responded to a report that McKinney had started fires there.

According to Police Information Officer Rodney Brown, officers learned from the North Platte Fire Department that McKinney spread gasoline from a fire pit in the back yard to other areas, including an adjoining neighbor’s fence.

There was damage to the mobile home and a television cable too.

The assault of an officer occurred in March 2013 in McKinney’s neighborhood. McKinney was reportedly banging on doors and yelling. While arresting him, he spit blood on an officer.

The May arrest was McKinney’s third of the year. Jail records show he has been arrested nine times since January 2011 on a variety of charges, including driving under the influence, driving under suspension, probation violations, assault, trespassing and once because he was wanted in Logan County.
