Teen charged with playground assaultTell North Platte what you think

Police recently caught up with two suspects who face felony charges for relatively minor crimes.

One of the suspects is a 17-year-old boy who allegedly roughed up a younger boy at a school playground.

At around 10:15 p.m. Saturday, a police officer went to a home in the 200 block of W. Second on the report of a prior assault at Washington Elementary, a few blocks away in the 600 block of W. Third.

A 12-year-old boy told police that the 17-year-old put him in a headlock and choked him while hanging out on the school’s playground.

Police met the suspect Thursday and determined there was probable cause to charge him with strangulation, an automatic felony charge. The suspect was charged with third-degree assault, too. He was booked and released from the Lincoln County jail.

Accused shoplifter arrested

Around 9 a.m. Monday, a police officer went to Gary’s Super Foods on the report of a shoplifting incident.

The store staff said they’d seen, Marcos Escarsega, 28, get a bottle of alcohol from the liquor section, conceal it on his person and walk out without paying.

Police found Escarsega around midnight Wednesday when they went to the Wyman Trailer Court in the 2400 block of W. Ninth on the report of a disturbance. Escarsega was there, so he was arrested and charged with felony shoplifting.

The shoplifting charge is a felony because Escarsega has several prior charges, police information officer Rodney Brown said.
